Revisit: iQQU Advance Sunscreen + some things I would like to note.

NOTE: This is a very long and wordy post, so sorry if you're not into that. I do include some useful information though, if you are interested in iQQU and/or are considering buying the sunscreen!

This has been on my mind for some time, but after reading Mai's post about her half-full iQQU Advance Sunscreen, I just wanted to get this out there.

For those who are not familiar with the iQQU brand, it is a skincare line created by Michelle Phan (aka Ricebunny). I adored her from the start and find her extremely talented, classy, and all-around awesome... and I was elated when she came out with her product line.

When I first ordered iQQU Advance sunscreen, it was the least expensive item at $33 (it is now priced at $25... + shipping = $33). Added shipping made it over $40 and if I do recall, it took VERY long to get here. Apparently the company is based in Thailand, which kind of made me wary.... hmm.

The sunscreen was GREAT -- you can read my review here -- I loved it but did not use it on an everyday basis. So after some time when I decided I wanted to use it again, I found out that it had turned liquidy! Maybe it's just the Hawaii weather. Anyways, it seemed to perform the same way when applied despite the watery-ness.

So I emailed iQQU to ask about why the texture change. I had also been reading reviews and lots of other people mentioned that their tubes were only half-full and/or occured other texture changes like becoming "grainy", and she sent them another tube. Now even though a little goes a long way, it is still a very small tube so I can see why people would be disappointed and feel "cheated" because even though the amount of product itself is 30ml, the tube is much bigger than that.

Her response to the worried customers was: "We're fixing this issue. Because the sunscreen is a mousse like texture, we realized we should have overfilled the tubes. It's exactly 30mL, weight I mean, but it doesnt fill it all the way because the texture is not so dense. We've already fixed it on the new sunscreens." Here are some of her other responses below...

What? If you read her first response, didn't she just say it was not so dense?

What??? "it's only 30ml" ... "you really got 40ml, not 30" So what is it???

Okay then, I guess it is 40ml. But the sunscreen tubes are certainly NOT fuller!!!

And here is an example of why quality control is so important.

Michelle assured me she will send me a new tube, but never did answer my question about the texture change, which was really bothering me -- is it still okay to use? I sure hope so because I did still use it. She says she is the only one answering customer emails and is probably always busy, but I think customer service is an integral part of a business -- and being able to answer important consumer questions is a MUST.

I waited months for an answer about my question and my new sunscreen, but nothing. I got an email from her a month or so ago, just about my Black Friday order, and if it had gone through. It had (the rice scrub) but I asked her what about the new sunscreen she'd promised? So she assured me again she'd send it, and I did receive it shortly after.

The thing with this new sunscreen (and Mai's too -- maybe everyone's now?) is that the texture is NOT soft, light, and mousse-like how my first tube was. It is more solid and dense, and comes out in a ball of product that you have to mush around until it becomes soft again so you can apply it. My new tube seemed heavier, but now I realize it is just because the product is more dense. It is still only half-full. So far, it has not turned liquidy, and I don't want to complain more because it was free, but this is definitely NOT something I am satisfied with. The "new" tubes are still not completely full of product AND the texture is not the same -- infact, it seems a little greasier IMHO.

My "new" tube -- definitely NOT fuller!

I completely understand that she is most likely under a lot of pressure with this business, but I don't think it would kill iQQU to enforce some quality control and make sure that the product they are sending out is exactly what they are advertising. Shouldn't trustworthy companies make sure a product has the correct amount BEFORE mailing it off to the masses and then saying they'll correct the problem, but obviously haven't? Shouldn't they test how the product reacts to different temperatures? Shouldn't they make sure that every single batch is the same texture and consistency that they are claiming is so revolutionary?

Now I cannot speak for any other iQQU products besides the rice scrub and the sunscreen, but I feel like the sunscreen was just put out there too early. I think it could have used much more testing and improvement before introducing it -- for starters, put it in a smaller tube, so we actually feel like we're getting the full amount for the money!

Also, I'm not trying to discount Michelle or anything, as again, I feel she is very wonderful & talented, but in the case of putting out her line; maybe she (or whoever was pushing for it) was a little too eager. It would have helped to have a full customer service team set up beforehand, so she wouldn't be the only one swamped with orders and questions, and there could also be better communication between her and her iQQU team in regards to the products and packaging BEFORE introducing it to the public and later discovering inconsistencies that end up disappointing her trusting customers. So unfortunately, I would not reccomend this product anymore, until I hear news that it has been improved. And I'm sure many of us would like that!

Lastly, I hope iQQU does not forget that we are counting on them to truthfully respresent what is written on their "About Us" page:

  • IQQU was created and inspired by everyday people who were never happy with their skin care products.
  • The name IQQU means inspiration.

iQQU Jasmine Rice Scrub review

Price:
$15 from http://www.iqqubeauty.com/

What they say: This luxurious rice scrub is a delight for the skin using the finest organic jasmine rice grown in Asia. The rice is hand milled to perfection to smooth away any dullness to the skin. The delicious scent is reminisce of a bowl of fresh rice, making this scrub a treat for the skin. This scrub is paraben free and should be used at night once every 2 days. The young rice scrub and rice bran oil is enriched with vitamin E, a natural powerful anti-oxidant.This creamy scrub firms the skin and reduces wrinkles while balancing the skin's complexion. There is a natural exfoliation effect from the young rice scrub. Furthermore, it helps whiten the skin. This creamy scrub gives a natural moisturizing effect that keeps the skin looking healthy and young. Paraben Free Not tested on animals.

What to do: Moisten makeup-free skin with water. Using fingertips, massage the product onto skin in a circular motion, avoiding the eye area. Once finished, rinse and pat dry. Follow by serums and creams.

Key Ingredients: Rice Bran - Is rich in natural vitamins and omega. Tocopherol - An organic compound composed of Vitamin E and antioxidants.

Active Ingredients: Aqua, Mineral oil, Rice scrub, Stearic acid, Glycerine, Steareth-2, Steareth-21, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether, Carbomer, Jasmine essential oil, Vitamin E, Phenoxyethanol (and) Ethylhexylglycerin, Apple extract, Fig extract

The good stuff:
  • Inexpensive compared to other iQQU products
  • Smells deeeelicious!
  • A little goes a long way
  • Gently exfoliates
  • Leaves skin smooth & glowy
  • Post-cleansing "moisturizing" effect good for dry skin

The low-down:

  • It's in a tub... a small tub
  • Still pricey for the size
  • I'm undecided about the "whitening" claims

My take: This is pretty much my new favorite scrub. First off I'd have to say that the only real gripe I have with this product is that it is in a tub, and the tub is small -- this may deter some people from buying because although it is about half the price of many other iQQU products ($15 compard to $33), having to twist the top off and dip your fingers into the tub is a bit bothersome AND unhygenic. I would really want to see this scrub in a flip-cap squeeze tube or pump bottle instead!

You only need VERY LITTLE to wash your whole face. One finger tip swipe's worth will do. The texture is rich and creamy but also ever so slightly oily-slick feeling. The rice particles are large but very gently exfoliating. This really leaves my skin feeling soft and smooth and looking healthy and radiant. Oh and I mentioned this bothered me - mineral oil is the second ingredient on the list and my skin is oily/sensitive atm so that concerned me. After washing off this scrub, I could feel a slight greasy film left on my skin so I had to rinse my face/hands really well to get it off. This effect would probably be more desireable to those with dry or normal skin, as it is "moisturizing." No breakouts though and this has definitely improved my skin tone and complexion!

About the whitening, I don't want to say it really does whiten skin because although I've been using this every day for over 2 weeks, I don't feel my skin is much lighter. I do feel like this scrub improved my complexion by making it brighter in a more radiant way, but not exactly whitened. Either way, I still love this scrub because it just makes me skin super soft and glowy!

Would I repurchase: Yes!

iQQU Advance Sunscreen review

I realize I have never done a proper review of this. So I figure now is a good time :P I emailed Michelle and she is nice enough to send me a new tube since I ordered mine in an early batch that was 3o ml full, but not completely full due to the product settling~

Sleek, simple packaging

But it's so small! Not to fear, read on for more . . .

Price: $33 + shipping (mine came about $4o) from http://www.iqqubeauty.com/

What they say: No words can describe how smooth, light and amazing this sunscreen is. You can apply this sunscreen over makeup! You just have to try it out for yourself. It's non greasy, non oily, feels like nothing when you apply it on and provides maximum protection. Non-Comedogenic. No Fragrance. Paraben Free

This product is for you if...
  • You want an advanced sun protection for your skin.
  • You want a non-greasy, non-sticky, smooth velvety sunscreen.
  • You want to have a silky complexion.
  • You want to fade your brown spots.
  • You want a sunscreen that is makeup friendly.
  • You want a sunscreen that does not run easily.
  • You want SPF 35 UVA/UVB protection without clogging the pores.
  • You want your skin to retain moisture.

Key Ingredients:

  • Saccharide Isomerate- is a carbohydrate that acts as a highly effective moisture regulator resulting in long-lasting water retention in the skin.
  • Lycopene- is an antioxidant derived from tomatoes that helps improve the skin's texture and provides natural SPF.

Active Ingredients: Isononyl Isonanonate, Glyceryl Stearate, Cyclopentasiloxane (and)Dimethicone, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Cyclopentasiloxane (and) C30-45 Alkyl Cetearyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Talcum,Titanium Dioxide, Saccharide Isomerate, Octyl Methoxycinnamate, Lycopene extract

The good stuff:

  • Mattifies skin
  • Controls shine
  • SPF 35 UVA and UVB protection
  • Silky smooth mousse texture
  • Easy to apply and blend, absorbs instantly
  • Need LESS than a pea size amount to cover entire face
  • Improves look of tone & complexion
  • Makes skin look smooth -- like you're wearing foundation but natural

The low-down:

  • Expensive
  • Available only online
  • I cannot speak for the "fades brown spots" claim
  • Texture may change?
  • Comes from Thailand -- should I be wary of this?
  • The size may worry people

My take: I love love this product! I have been a fan of Michelle Phan of ricebunny for years now and when she came out with her own skincare line, it was exciting! The only downside, the products are a bit on the pricey side. When I received it, I was shocked by how tiny it was. It also was only about half full. I just assumed that's how it was supposed to be . . but I was reading the reviews on iQQU lately and apparently those who ordered in the beginning batches had 30 ml worth of product, but the tubes weren't filled up. Michelle's response:

"We're fixing this issue. Because the sunscreen is a mousse like texture, we realized we should have overfilled the tubes. It's exactly 30mL, weight I mean, but it doesnt fill it all the way because the texture is not so dense. We've already fixed it on the new sunscreens. "

So I am hoping to get my new tube soon =) Anyways, I have never used this product consistently (like for months at a time) but I have used it for a few weeks out of a month. Which is why I don't know if it would fade brown spots . . also because I don't really have any :P I have freckles . . but I don't think that counts. However, from my experience, it quickly improved the look of my complexion and skin tone once applied. It really made my skin look as if I was wearing foundation, but it was BETTER than foundation, yet still very natural looking. My skin looked super smooth and matte and stayed that way pretty much all day.

The texture is a light, whipped mousse consistency that is as claimed; not sticky or greasy. It is very easy to smooth on and blend. You have to blend it really well though since it's white. I use my fingers. Also, I only need MUCH LESS than a pea sized amount to cover my whole face. Which is why the tube is so little. Even though my tube was only half full, it is still only half full. It's been about 3 months! But also, the texture of this first tube changed after time. It is now a more liquidy texture. I have not exposed it to excessive heat or sunlight, so I'm not sure why that happened . . maybe another fluke with the first batch? That's another reason why I am excitedly awaiting my second tube. Overall, I consider this one of my HG beauty products; one of the few things I would spend upwards of $40 on because it works really well for me.

Would I repurchase: Yes. If the price doesn't deter you, this is an extremely worthy buy.

These are old pictures I used in a FOTD awhile ago (you can tell by the hair haha, I miss it ;_;) but this is ONLY using iQQU Advance Sunscreen. No foundation! (Sorry for the bad quality, taken on my cellphone.. you can click to view larger)

This is true... I don't really depend on the opinions of others, but I do take them into account.

iQQU whaa? & Rants

I'm totally wired on like... 20 hours of House(!) I'm in a blunt kind of mood so bear with me lol xD

My iQQU order came in today... from Thailand O_o I had no idea it came from there... I mean I know this stuff is supposed to be the ish and all but should this make me feel funny it's not from USA? Or should this make me feel good? Lol.

Anyways, I haven't tried it yet but I'm hoping with all my might that this is NOT going to be one of those products that I'm going to regret buying later....

The packaging is simple and sleek,

But it's so SMALL!!! I mean I'm sure it'll last a long time and the site clearly stated 30ml of product... but I'm not exactly going to be sitting there invisioning the exact size a 30ml tube of product is going to be... :( I paid $36+ for this stuff ;A;

It barely fits in the palm of my hand
... Like I said though, I'm sure it's great and all, but I'm just the kind of person that doesn't like super small size products unless they're mini samples -_-;; Anyways, will try this out next week and see how it does... review coming soon!

UGH! Also, this is why I hate dealing with people on ebay:

I bought a rear emblem for my car but I neglected to think about the size and the one I got ended up being too big. I didn't open the package at all and it's in mint condition but they seller won't let me return it. I asked 3x already if I could just return it for a refund but I've been answered with "I'll give you a smaller one for 50% off" So I thought about that for awhile and forgot about it for a couple weeks and messaged them back today. I said it's okay, can I just return it and get a refund? I was met with "Shipping back to Israel is too expensive. I'll sell you another for 30% off." (in horribly broken english, mind you).

Now I'm kind of peeved and getting the picture that I'm not going to get my money back. Even if it wasn't a lot of $$, I could still use it. And this is why I dislike dealing with ebay -_-;; SO, if anyone needs a newer model civic emblem, let me know lol. I'll pretty much just GIVE it to you xD

HOWEVER, I will deal with sellers who have good ratings :P I just purchased Skin Food's Lime Secret Glow Pact #3 and Etude House's Color me nude lip concealer from sellers Whit reccommended.... hope these live up to their good reviews lol since I've been needing a new pressed powder and always wanted to try Etude House products.
